A Commercial Food Equipment Technician is a trusted expert that troubleshoots, diagnoses, repairs and maintains a variety of food service equipment including cooking, refrigeration, dishwashing, and baking.
Each day there is a new challenge waiting to be solved in commercial kitchens across the state. Technicians begin their day being dispatched from their home, where they jump in their company van to the location of a repair. A typical day can include disassembling and reassembling equipment, reading diagrams and schematics, operating hand tools, power tools, and gauges to perform service of a unit. Techs also lift, carry, pull and push components to test, set up or maintain equipment. No day is exactly the same, and at the end of the day you drive home feeling accomplished because you just saved the livelihood of a food service operation. Yes, clients do see you as a superhero.
How do you become one?
Are you mechanically and electrically inclined? Training is done on-the-job alongside a master technician until you’re ready to jump on a van of your own. There is no set time frame for training, it is dependent on how well you grasp skills to become independent.
This is a skilled trade. There is no educational debt like a traditional 2 or 4 year college. Once you’re in a van, you’re making money to live the lifestyle you envision for yourself.
